Today when you go to a medical clinic or hospital, you'll see all the nurses wearing medical scrubs. Historically, nurses would be seen wearing starched white dresses and nursing caps. Now, you rarely see nursing caps and only a handful of places still require nurses to wear white.
There are mixed feelings on the change from starched dresses and caps to medical scrubs. Older patients who remember seeing the old uniforms sometimes feel a lack of professionalism is displayed with modern nursing scrubs. This is partly due to the lack of distinction between nurses, CNAs, technicians and occasionally even doctors since all scrubs are fairly generic in style. Certain clinics and hospitals do follow dress codes to try to help distinguish who is who. For example, a hospital may require nurses to wear only one color, CNAs another, technicians different colors based on their specialties and receptionists/office staff can wear any print scrub tops.
You may be wondering what happened to the old starched white dresses and nursing caps. White is notorious for staining easily so the white dress lost popularity due to the difficulty of keeping it clean. Nursing caps are another story entirely. They were found to be more dangerous in the clinic/hospital setting than any other part of the nursing uniform because of how much bacteria they collected. To help prevent the spread of sickness and infections, not to mention how difficult they were to keep pinned on top of your head properly, they were removed from the nurses' uniform. Both the white dress and the nursing cap where also phased out around the same time when more men joined the nursing profession.
White nursing dresses and even scrub skirts can still be found today. Marcus Uniforms offers a growing selection of both dresses and skirts. White scrubs are also available for those who prefer or are still required to wear white uniforms. These days, the dresses don't require starch and most whites are treated with a stain release option to help keep the whites bright longer.
Marcus Uniforms also has a great selection of solid scrubs, print scrub tops, solid scrub sets and scrub pants in a variety of colors and sizes. You can also find lab coats, shoes, socks and other medical accessories. Marcus Uniforms offers free UPS ground shipping within the continental United States on all orders over $100 in the United States and a 10% discount on all orders over $300.
